Richmond is absolutely brimming with beautiful spots for family portraits! As a local photographer who’s explored countless Richmond outdoor portrait spots, I’m excited to share some favorite locations that provide gorgeous backdrops throughout the year.
Maymont Park tops many families’ location wishlist, and for good reason. With its diverse landscape featuring Japanese gardens, Italian gardens, rolling hills, and historic architecture, we can capture a variety of looks without changing locations. The park is especially beautiful in spring when flowers bloom and in fall when leaves change color.
Brown’s Island and the Canal Walk offer a perfect blend of nature and urban elements. The James River provides a stunning backdrop, while the walking bridges and historic structures add interesting textures to your photos. This area works well for families who want a more modern feel to their portraits.
While the popular spots are beloved for good reason, some of my favorite Richmond outdoor portrait spots are lesser-known gems that provide unique backdrops without the crowds.
Texas Beach access to the James River offers gorgeous rocky areas, small sandy beaches, and beautiful wooded paths. The diverse landscape provides multiple settings in one location, and the slightly more difficult access means we rarely encounter other photographers or crowds.
The grounds surrounding the Virginia House Museum in Windsor Farms offer beautiful gardens, historic architecture, and stunning views that many Richmond families don’t know about. This location works beautifully in all seasons, with blooming gardens in spring and summer and gorgeous fall color later in the year.
Different seasons call for different locations to showcase Richmond’s natural beauty at its best. In spring, Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden bursts with color from tulips, daffodils, and cherry blossoms. While there is an entry fee, the variety of maintained gardens makes it well worth the investment.
Summer sessions work beautifully at Belle Isle, where the rocky terrain of the island creates a natural, rugged backdrop. The pedestrian bridge also offers unique perspectives with the river flowing below.
For fall portraits, Forest Hill Park shines with its abundant trees displaying vibrant autumn colors. The stone staircases and historic structures add architectural interest to complement the natural elements.
Winter sessions require more creativity, but locations like Tredegar Iron Works offer industrial textures and protection from wind. Echo Harbor along the Capital Trail also provides winter interest with its mix of natural and urban elements.
Families with small children often appreciate locations with room to move and explore. Deep Run Park in the West End offers wooden boardwalks, open fields, and a playground nearby—perfect for capturing authentic moments with energetic little ones.
For families including elderly members or those with mobility concerns, the VMFA’s sculpture garden provides beautiful backgrounds with easy access and nearby seating areas. Chimborazo Park also offers accessible pathways with stunning city views.
Even the most beautiful Richmond outdoor portrait spots shine brightest during the “golden hour”. That’s the magical time about an hour before sunset when the light is warm and soft. This flattering light transforms even simple settings into something magical.
When you book your session, we’ll discuss your family’s personality and preferences to select the perfect Richmond outdoor portrait location that feels authentic to you. The best family photos happen when you feel comfortable and connected to your surroundings!
