I recently met the Lahm family for their Dogwood Dell family photography, and let me tell you – it was one of those sessions where everything just clicked. Their kids were incredibly photogenic, smiling practically the entire time. As a photographer, these moments are always gold!
The newly reopened Carillon War Memorial at Dogwood Dell provided a stunning backdrop for our session. The clean lines and elegant architecture also created a timeless look for their family portraits. With spring blooms starting to appear, the setting balanced natural beauty with classical architecture.
Working with kids of different ages can be tricky, but the Lahm children were a photographer’s dream. Their big sister took her role seriously, helping her younger siblings smile for the camera. Those natural interactions between siblings often create the most genuine images.
Even their youngest, who’s just starting to walk, gave us the most adorable smiles. Getting authentic expressions from babies this age isn’t always guaranteed, so I was thrilled when he kept beaming at the camera!
For the Lahms’ session, we created a mix of posed family portraits and candid moments of them playing together. The late afternoon light at Dogwood Dell also cast a beautiful glow across the grounds, perfect for creating those soft, flattering portraits parents love.
When photographing families, I look for natural connections and interactions. The Lahms made this easy – their comfort with each other showed in every frame. Mom’s background as a photographer meant she understood exactly how to move and position everyone without making it feel forced.
It’s always an honor when another photographer chooses me to capture their family. As a Richmond family photographer, I feel an extra layer of responsibility when working with industry peers. Mom’s creative eye and understanding of good light made our collaboration during the session feel effortless.
I know firsthand how rarely photographers appear in their own family photos. Being able to give another photographer the gift of existing in images with their children feels especially meaningful.
The Lahms’ gallery showcases exactly what I aim for in Dogwood Dell family photography – joyful, authentic moments in a beautiful setting. Their family connection also shines through in every image, from the group portraits to the candid moments of siblings playing.
These images will only grow more precious as their children continue growing and changing. I’m grateful they trusted me to preserve this chapter of their family story at Dogwood Dell.
