There’s nothing quite like an in-home Richmond newborn session to capture those first precious days with your little one. When the Huffs welcomed me back into their home to photograph their new addition, it felt like coming full circle after their engagement, wedding, and maternity sessions.
Choosing your own home for newborn photos offers so many advantages. For starters, you don’t have to pack up and transport your brand new baby anywhere. Everything you need is right there – diapers, feeding supplies, and comfortable spaces for the whole family.
Moreover, your home tells your unique story. The nursery you’ve lovingly prepared, your favorite reading chair, even your front porch – these spaces hold meaning that will make your photos even more special as the years pass.
During the Huffs’ session, we moved through several areas of their home. We started in the nursery they had shown me during their maternity session, now complete with their little one! The bedroom provided a cozy spot for family cuddles, and we even recreated some poses from their maternity shoot on their front porch.
In addition, these different settings gave us plenty of variety while keeping baby comfortable and secure in their own environment.
Let me tell you a secret about newborn sessions – babies cry! The Huffs’ little one had some fussy moments, but that’s completely normal and nothing to worry about. I’ve developed a knack for timing my shots perfectly, catching those split-second smiles between pacifier breaks.
Furthermore, I’m never in a rush during newborn sessions. We take all the time needed for feeding, soothing, and diaper changes. Those quiet moments between parents and baby often lead to the most heartwarming images.
One thing I loved about the Huffs’ session was capturing photos in the same locations as their maternity pictures. Therefore, they now have beautiful before-and-after images showing their journey. The front porch where mom once showed off her baby bump now features their complete family of three.
I believe these connected sessions tell a deeper story than standalone photos ever could. From expecting parents to a family, their story unfolds in the familiar spaces of home.
